Halibut
Location: Halibut lay on bottom, usually in sand. A good halibut spot is a good halibut spot year after year, particularly if is it a "structure" spot
Social Behavior: Will hang out a lot when mating in late spring - early summer, spawn in 100 to 200 feet of water but closer to 100
Rough Day: Avoid diving for them when it is rough as they move out to deep water to keep from getting getting blasted
Calm Day: Best time to look for halibut
Best Place to find them: Near structure where sand and/or kelp meet
2nd Best place to find: Near food like squid or bait fish. Just outside of surf line (for baitfish) and 50-60ft for squid
How you know they're near?: You will see divots in the sand with an outline of a halibut body or you will see flying sand and a flapping tail because you spooked one
Likes: Squid!
How to attract?: N/A
Reaction to a gunshot: They do not like noise, try to be quiet
Will tolerate: You to pet them on scuba if you are quiet and slow in your movements
Hates: To be approached from behind ..approach them from the head first
Meet Strategy: Don't hunt them on meet day..they are the ultimate long shot fish
How to hunt: With a powerful gun, preferably a 3 band mid handle Riffe gun
Depths to hunt: Always on the bottom. They deeper you dive up to 50ft, the bigger the average size of halibut
Always remember: The most important skill is learning how to "see" them as they blend very well with the sand
These fish only spook because you didn't see them
They prefer to face into the current, even if it a light one
Shoot them behind the eyes. You will stone them and lose less meat
